Chakras

The idea of chakras comes from Indian tantric and yogic traditions thousands of years old; in Sanskrit it means "wheel". Tradition describes seven main centres along the middle of the body, each linked with an area of life: safety, flow, will, love, expression, intuition and connection. In Sakin each chakra meets a colour, an element and a frequency; the practice begins by gently bringing your attention to one centre.

Reiki and energy

Reiki is a calm energy practice in which the hands rest lightly on the body or are held just above it. In the Reiki tradition, universal life energy flows through the practitioner and is guided to the chakra centres. NCCIH, part of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), describes Reiki as a complementary approach. Hospitals such as Cleveland Clinic have offered short Reiki sessions to patients as complementary support. In Turkey, nursing researchers have studied Reiki in state and university hospitals with randomized trials; it was linked with less anxiety and pain before endoscopy and after abdominal surgery and caesarean birth. A 2024 meta-analysis also linked Reiki with a clear decrease in anxiety. Some long-term observations report that heart rate variability changes together with the Earth's geomagnetic activity.

Studies we read

Each card shows what the study actually found, and its limits.

Limited evidence

A systematic review and meta-analysis suggesting Reiki may be better than placebo on some mood measures.

Limitation: Few studies per outcome.

Zadro, S., Stapleton, P. (2022). Does Reiki benefit mental health symptoms above placebo?. Frontiers in Psychology. doi:10.3389/fpsyg.2022.897312

Moderate evidence

A meta-analysis covering 824 adults linked Reiki with a clear decrease in anxiety.

Limitation: Results are less consistent for pre-surgery and cancer-related anxiety; most studies had no sham control.

Moderate evidence

In 159 patients, a single Reiki session before endoscopy was linked with lower stress and anxiety and more comfort than sham and control groups.

Limitation: Single centre, single session.

Moderate evidence

At Çukurova University, 93 patients in the Reiki group had less surgical fear, anxiety and pain, compared with sham and control groups.

Limitation: Single centre; Reiki was given by the researcher.

Limited evidence

In 90 women, Reiki was linked with less pain, anxiety and need for pain relief after caesarean birth.

Limitation: The control group only rested; no sham.

Limited evidence

A meditation focused on the heart and crown chakras was linked with lower exam anxiety in 100 nursing students.

Limitation: Control was usual preparation; short follow-up.

Limited evidence

In 16 people over 5 months, heart rate variability was linked with changes in solar and geomagnetic activity.

Limitation: An observational study; it does not show energy being guided to the chakras.
