The meaning of the dolphin
The dolphin is where joy and intelligence meet in the sea. For thousands of years people have spoken of it as a friend and guide at sea.
Dolphins on the Aegean and Black Sea coasts
Along the coasts of Anatolia the dolphin has long been a good sign. Fishermen greet dolphins swimming beside the boat as a promise of a rich catch and a calm sea, and believe that harming them brings bad luck. In antiquity many Aegean coastal cities stamped dolphins on their coins. The story of the poet Arion, who set out from Lesbos, unfolds in these waters: when sailors throw him overboard, a dolphin that had listened to his song carries him to shore on its back. The name of Delphi is linked with the tale of Apollo taking the form of a dolphin. Today three dolphin species live in the Black Sea, and coastal people love them as the sea's cheerful companions.
The dolphin in world cultures
On the frescoes of the Minoan palace at Knossos on Crete, dolphins swim with freedom and the joy of life. In Māori stories of New Zealand, dolphins are guardian beings who guide sailors. Legends of the pink boto dolphin of the Amazon tell of it taking human form at night and joining festivities. In India the Ganges river dolphin is respected as part of the sacred river. In early Christian art the dolphin was drawn as a guide carrying souls safely across. In sailors' tales dolphins pushed drowning people to the surface and showed lost ships the way to shore. All over the world the dolphin is a symbol of joy, friendship and a wisdom rising from the depths of water.
Symbolism from the dolphin's nature
Dolphins can rest one half of the brain while the other half stays awake, so they sleep and still rise to the surface to breathe. Each dolphin has its own signature whistle, which researchers believe is used like a name; dolphins call one another with it. They hunt with sound, reading the inside of the sea like a picture from echoes. They live in groups and have been seen lifting an injured or weak companion to the surface so it can breathe. Riding waves and leaping into the air is plainly play. This nature makes the dolphin a symbol that play and wisdom are not enemies: joy does not dull intelligence, it nourishes it.
When a dolphin appears in dreams or in your days
In old Anatolian dream readings a dolphin often meant joyful news, a trustworthy friend or relief from hardship. Today many people relate a dolphin dream to their emotions, their relationships and the share of joy in their life. Swimming beside a dolphin in a dream may invite a reflection: how much room have you made lately for play and laughter? Or is there someone who carries you through the waves, who stays beside you? The dolphin reminds you that lightness is possible even in hard moments; you can leap with joy while swimming in deep water. Joy is a form of wisdom too, and sometimes you hear your inner voice most clearly in those moments.
